As viewed from the Bear Rocks area of the Dolly Sods Wilderness, the sun rises over a mountain ridge in the highlands of West Virginia.

When it comes to sober living, it can feel like a pretty dramatic switch from the way you lived in the past to the way you live now. Changing up your routine, seeking new habits and pursuing sober activities all at the same time may feel overwhelming.

But to maintain sobriety and also feel a sense of normalcy in your life, it’s important to find those fun, peaceful activities that not only support your recovery efforts but allow you to rediscover the joy the little things in life provide.

Sober activities in Kearneysville, WV

We want to take the time to point out some sober activities for adults in our West Virginia quadrant who are not only enrolled in mental health treatment but are seeking a balanced lifestyle to boost their health in all ways.

If you live in or around the Kearneysville area (or will be seeking treatment in the area and will be taking up residency there for a brief period), these suggestions are for you.

Get involved with the Potomac Valley Audubon Society

If you enjoy being out in nature, are passionate about conservation and want to be part of a good cause, consider becoming a member of the Potomac Valley Audubon Society

According to their mission statement, “We value biodiversity in nature, and we recognize the importance of diversity across our organization. Diversity, inclusion, and equity are essential to our community and to our mission to preserve and enjoy the natural world through education and action.”

Not only do they offer dozens of classes, including certification programs where you become a master in subjects like birding, aquatic studies and soil identification, but they also provide wellness walks, nature journaling, field trips and so much more. Hopefully you will find peace and fulfillment in being outside and working for such a reputable cause.

Explore a local coffee shop

Who doesn’t love some local coffee and a soothing aesthetic coffee spot? Kearneysville and the surrounding towns have plenty of local options to choose from.

  • Black Dog Coffee (named after their beloved black lab, Bear) not only offers spectacular coffee but hosts events like food truck nights, yoga classes and Farmer’s Market Day right in the comfort of their store, providing an opportunity for both wholehearted living and community building;
  • Lost Dog Coffee is more than just a coffee shop, but is a vibrant, bursting experiment of barista craftsmanship and local art. Not only are they serving up gorgeous latte art, but they promote local artwork and support local artists by displaying paintings and drawings throughout the shop for all to admire;
  • More than a coffee shop, The Espresso Bar is serving up delicious Italian cuisine, from expertly crafted espressos to authentically Italian pizzas to pastries that will transport you right to the Sicilian coastline – if you’re looking for a place to treat yourself, don’t think twice about visiting this local gem.

While these are just a select few of the local coffee shops, you are sure to find a fast favorite among all the options in the Kearneysville area.

Go thrifting

Who doesn’t love a good thrift store find? In the journey of recovery, you may feel like you want to reestablish yourself and make some changes in your living space and/or your closet. While it’s probably out of the budget to do a complete overhaul, consignment stores and thrift shops allow you to shop on a budget and help the planet at the same time.

For an afternoon of thrifting, look no further than This and That Consignment. Not only will they let you sell some of your unwanted items, but you’ll hopefully be able to find new necessities to help promote that sense of a fresh start in your life.

Take a hike

Getting outside in nature is incredibly healing for the mind and body, and Kearneysville and the surrounding area have so much to offer in regard to gorgeous hiking trails. Maryland Heights, Harpers Ferry and the Appalachian Trail are just some of the hundreds of trailheads you can find nearby. Whether you are an expert hiker or are just starting to get in touch with this adventurous side, you are sure to find a trail to suit you.

Wander through botanical gardens

Botanical gardens are an often overlooked, though highly peaceful experience of spending the day wandering through beautiful plants and flowers. Taking in the beauty of nature in a quiet environment is truly refreshing for the soul.

A highly recommended garden is located in the Blandy Experimental Farm, with various sections themed around herbs, zoo plants, pollination gardens and a memorial section. And while you’re there, don’t hesitate to check out the rest of the experiences the Farm has to offer.
